Why are there more notes than signatures?

Do you remember SOPA? The bill that would give government the right to spy on internet activity without warrant, and let them censor “unwanted” sites by blocking people’s access to them?

Meet its twin. But this time it’s all the more frightening; the House has passed it despite Obama’s threats to veto. And by an alarmingly large margin, at that. CISPA threatens the US constitution’s guarantees of due privacy and free speech, permitting any government agency to access and transfer of vast amounts of data- from internet records to even the content of personal e-mails, and all without obtaining a warrant.

What’s even more disgusting than this bill actually making through the House is some of the arguments used to help it’s passage, and comments made by one of the bill’s biggest supporters admitting the bill helps big business while insulting opposers (whose is also speculated to have personal reasons for wanting CISPA made into law).

This threatens every element of your online presence. From personal emails to general activity, any government agency will have the ability to go fishing without consequence.

Please, PLEASE, sign the following petitions. You don’t even have to be a US citizen to sign most of them or act against CISPA, and please keep in mind that if this shit flies in America, who knows what country might use its example to do it, too.

Twitter: Tweet reps like @RepDelBene, @GovHankJohnson, @KeithEllison and @GovGaryJohnson and thanks them for acting against CISPA. Look for other reps that have spoken against it, and thank them.

Call your reps: and tell them you strongly oppose the bill. You can look up your reps using the form on the lower portion of this page.

See this picture? This comes from a town in Canada where a 24 pack of water bottles is 104 dollars and formula milk for a baby is priced at 55 dollars a pack. What’s more, a pack of diapers is 95 dollars and one head of lettuce is 26 dollars. Inuit people are starving in a country known for it’s generosity.
If you don’t believe this is true, you can find more images like this here. This is the only grocery store these people have in their small towns, and many people are going hungry & elderly are dying faster.
You’ll send aid to foreign children that are starving, so why won’t you pay a little extra to feed the people in your own country who work hard & still can’t afford the prices for healthy food for their families?
Please have a heart and reblog this photo to raise awareness that even in our own countries people are starving, join the movement and show the government that we won’t sit by and watch people starve.
If you think this will make your blog ugly you’re wrong. Children in a first world country are getting sick & starving, and nobody is even aware it’s happening. You can let people know by reblogging and showing you care. People I am close to, my friends and future in-laws are going through this.

Love how little attention this post gets from my beach blog followers.

Feminist Disney: Geneseo "Against Sexual Assault Awareness"

feministdisney:

tw rape culture

friendlyangryfeminist:

I walked into my first class this morning to see a talk being advertised that supposes that rape is not a problem in the United States, that women will know a rapist when we see one, that rape isn’t a problem on college campuses.

I wanted to cry. Instead I wrote down that Take Back The Night was scheduled for the same night.

And then I erased the details about the talk.

Accidentally of course. I was just so nauseous and had to take notes during class and was about to cry that I couldn’t concentrate and after all, it was distracting me.

Oops.

For some reason, I can’t publish links right now- but HERE IS THE LINK to a petition asking my administration to condemn Professor Ted Everett’s disgusting colloquium that is creating such a hostile environment for survivors.

I have 4000+ followers. This petition asks for 500 signatures and already has over 100. Please sign. It would mean the world to me. I want to go to class and not have to stare at a chalkboard telling me my rape didn’t matter. That I should’ve known better. That it was my fault.

In case you did not know, I know friendlyangryfeminist from real life because we both went to Geneseo (I graduated) and were in WAC/Pride so I was really upset to find out that this was going on, as well. I love that school. Geneseo should be above ANY member of the professional staff engaging in damaging rhetoric like this, especially so publicly.

I can’t believe he felt okay with posting that everywhere, especially scheduling it for the same time as Take Back the Night. I can’t believe an old white male philosophy professor feels himself really qualified to tell young students why their real and traumatic sexual assault experiences aren’t really an issue worthy of awareness, to the point where he even has to put it in quotes.

Anyone who has ever been to sexual assault awareness week comes away with the feeling that sexual assault affects so many MORE people than we even realize, not less. Victims hide themselves because of hateful rhetoric like this, that is aimed at them constantly. During the candlelight vigil multiple people I knew told their stories, some for the very first time, stories I was never aware of because “survivor” is not a patch someone wears on their shirt, you do not and will never know or understand the extent of sexual assault if you do not care enough to listen to the stories and actually take it seriously as a problem,

so yeah, Everett, really mad he is tenured, I hope he retires like, yesterday

image

please sign the petition or at least make Geneseo and/or Everett feel the heat in some way.

PS all Geneseo emails are publicly listed on their site, if you wish to contact him personally he can be found at everett@geneseo.edu

Please help me.

professorzachary:

I’ve made, like, two or three of these posts before. But here’s a new, shiny, updated one.

My name is Liam. I’m seventeen years old and I live in Texas with my parents, sister, and a corgi.

I need to leave, and I can’t do that without help. (I know, I know, why would I ever leave a corgi?)

I would like to leave on August 15, 2013. I’ll be packing my bags, hopping on a plane to Boston, and living with my friend in New Hampshire.

I’m transgender (genderqueer and male-presenting) and my dysphoria is getting increasingly severe. I came out to my parents a month ago, and now they’re using feminine pronouns and descriptors more than they ever have before. I’m not allowed to get a binder, even with my own money. I’m pretty sure at this point that they’re waving my assigned gender in my face on purpose.

My mother is emotionally and verbally abusive. She insults me, harasses me and makes jokes about my orientation, identity, intelligence, and mental illnesses. She’s manipulative, dramatic, and recently stole approximately twenty-five dollars from me while I was in a psychiatric unit. She has discounted my history of abuse on several occasions, and seems to find enjoyment in making sure I know that she “had it worse”. She throws tantrums nearly every day as of late. She refuses to get therapy although she admits to being depressed and angry.

I was sexually abused by my maternal grandparents at age three and possibly a bit into my fourth year. When I was ten, I was sexually  and verbally abused by a Sunday School teacher, who returned when I was twelve and sent the girls my age to harass and threaten me when I didn’t show up at Church.

I have a lot of issues, but I’m fairly certain that if I were given a change of scenery, I’d be significantly more well-adjusted.

After I came out as male-identifying, my mother has increased in the frequency and severity with which she abuses me. Since coming home from the hospital, she has told me to leave the house five times because she doesn’t want me here.

I have a place to stay, and people to help me back onto my feet, it’s just getting there and supporting myself until I can get a job that needs to be dealt with. Even fifty frickin cents counts, honestly.

I’m getting desperate now, and am counting down the weeks until August comes.

If you would rather not simply send money, and want to help in another way, I have an Amazon Wish List and will soon figure out a way to have items sent to the family I’ll be living with if people choose to purchase things for me. (Basic clothing and binders, mostly.)

Please reblog if you can’t donate.

Remove barriers that prevent advanced practice registered nurses from practicing to their full scope.

spacemarried:

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have provided safe and effective care in the United States for over four decades. When the Affordable Care ACT (ACA) is fully implemented in 2014 over 30 million Americans will gain coverage under the law. APRNs currently have barriers to practice which include requirements for being supervised by or having a collaborative agreement with a physician, inability to admit patients into hospice or home health and restrictions on prescription of controlled drugs. There is currently a shortage of primary care physicians and the restriction to APRN practice limits patients access to care. Advanced practice registered nurses should be allowed to practice to their full scope of education and training.

Tumblr! This petition could use some of your magic. We need almost 80,000 more signatures by April 22. Please reblog! Allowing advanced practice registered nurses to practice to their full scope is so important. APRNs most commonly have a DNP: Doctor of Nursing Practice, which is an additional three years of schooling on top of receiving their BSN (sometimes on top of also already having a Master’s degree), plus most DNP programs require at least a year of actual nursing practice before you can be admitted.

Additionally, though there are many nurses who are not women now, it is still a profession dominated by women and its evolution as a professional occupation runs parallel to the feminist movement. Nurses used to work autonomously in very poor or isolated communities early on, but that roll was restricted by law when doctors (then predominantly men) lobbied congress and fought to ensure that the nurse’s place was always inferior to the doctor’s. This isn’t to say that doctors don’t play their own important and essential function in healthcare, but nursing doesn’t seek to replace doctors. Any nurses’ scope of practice is still not as broad as a doctor’s, but APRNs deserve and should operate autonomously and some of the reason they don’t is undoubtedly because of the stigma of nursing being “women’s work” and in need of supervision.

Additionally, many women who are nurses are working mothers and they will work years in the field and gain so much experience before they continue on in their education, which means most DNPs that I know don’t just have 7 years of education under their belt. They have entire lifetimes of experience and knowledge on top of their traditional education.

So yeah, this should appeal to Tumblr on just a “it makes sense” level, but also a feminist level. SO PLEASE REBLOG THIS Y’ALL.

If Tumblr Can Help a Guy Get a Chicken...

Hello. My name is Neoma Lindley, and I live with a condition called ‘pseudo-tumor cerebri’, a form of IIH (idiopathic inter-cranial hypertension). This condition causes severe migraines, vision problems, and at times leaves me in such pain that I can’t function.

Treatment for this condition is a lumbar puncture and tap, to remove excess cerebral-spinal fluid. However, this procedure is expensive, and since my mother’s death last April, I have not been able to afford a tap, meaning my inter-cranial pressure is very high, and I am struggling to function.

With out treatment, I am experiencing radical and continual vision loss. I really need help.

I need this tap, and I need it as soon as possible, but without aid there is no way way for me to get it. Every little bit helps, you have no idea — if four thousand people can spare a single dollar to me, I’ll be in the clear for this procedure.

Please guys, I know this pain, I dealt with this just over a year ago and may be dealing with it now.
I have dealt with a lot of pain in my life, but the pain of a pseudo tumor is something… special. I have never vomited strictly from pain until then.

If it is untreated it can cause permanent blindness, brain damage, even death if it gets bad enough, long enough.

Signal boosting. Pseudotumor is literally the worst pain in the entire world ok like seriously until I got my tap all I could do was cry and throw up, I couldn’t even sleep I was in so much pain, much less get out of bed.

Please donate. I can’t imagine not being able to get treatment.

((It’s kind of mind blowing to see other people commenting on this post who know what I’m going through. Just, wow. Thank y’all for helping spread the word.))
